Preface
The purpose in our publishing Ten Short Chapters on the Vedantic
Way is to help fill that gap between the new inquirer and the
scriptures, texts and lectures to which one is exposed at the
Vedanta centers in the West. The casual visitor or first enquirer
often has to hear Sanskrit words that baffle, and see seasoned
students nodding their heads sagely as the Swami spins out the
metaphysical propositions and technical niceties of the Vedanta
texts; one can easily be put off. At the book counter we may
be handed a free fold-out which tries to explain Vedanta in a
few hundred words: stark aphorisms. Or offered a thick book on
Hinduism, having an Indian flavor and aroma, costing more than
one can risk.
This book, then, is not only an inexpensive introduction.
It is also something that can be passed on to an acquaintance
who has asked you about your religion, or the meetings you attend.
Originally issued as "The Leaflets", eight pamphlets
designed to introduce topics of the type discussed in our meetings
to a wider public in Atlanta, the material has undergone thorough
revision and two subjects added, "Our Scriptures" and
"The Teachers". We hope it will meet the above needs.
